Apostille service in Malta

The apostille is the certificate that authenticates a public document for use in another country that is party to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention. In Malta, apostilles are issued by the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade in Valletta.

An apostille confirms the authenticity of the signature, seal or stamp on a document — not its content. Once apostilled, a Maltese document can be used directly in any other Convention country without further legalisation.

We prepare your file, check that the document carries a signature registered for legalisation, obtain a certified true copy or a fresh original when necessary, and submit it to the Ministry on your behalf. We can also apostille the certified translation, as many countries require both.

If the destination country is not a member of the Hague Convention, an apostille is not enough: the document must go through consular or embassy legalisation instead. We handle that too.

Frequently asked questions

Which documents can be apostilled in Malta?

Public documents issued in Malta, such as civil status certificates, police conduct certificates, court documents, notarial deeds, academic certificates and Malta Business Registry documents. Some documents must first be certified by the issuing body or a notary.

Do I need an apostille for a document used within the EU?

Often not. EU Regulation 2016/1191 removes the apostille requirement for many public documents (birth, marriage, residence, criminal record and others) circulating between EU Member States. Other documents, and documents used outside the EU, may still need one. We check this for you.

Can a foreign document be apostilled in Malta?

No. An apostille can only be issued by the country that issued the document. For foreign documents we can coordinate the apostille in the country of origin through our international network.
