Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
How much does a certified translation cost in Malta?
Each request is quoted individually because the price depends on the document, the language combination, the type of certification, the destination country and the deadline. Quotes are free and without obligation.
How long does it take?
Standard personal documents are often ready within a few working days. Apostille and embassy legalisation add time, depending on the authorities involved. Express service is available on request — we always confirm the timeline in our quote.
Do I need to come to your office?
No. Most orders are handled entirely online and by courier. When an original is needed or a signature must be made before a notary, we arrange it with you.
What is an apostille?
An apostille is a certificate that authenticates a public document for use in another country that is party to the 1961 Hague Convention. In Malta it is issued by the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade.
What if the destination country does not accept apostilles?
Then the document needs full consular legalisation, which involves the Ministry and the embassy or consulate of the destination country. We handle the entire chain.
Can you translate documents into Maltese?
Yes. We translate into and from Maltese, English, Italian, French and more than 40 other languages.
Is my data safe?
Yes. Documents are handled confidentially by our team and translators, used only to fulfil your order, and processed in accordance with the GDPR.
Which payment methods do you accept?
Payment details are included with your quote. Please contact us if you need an invoice in the name of a company.
Certified translation
What is the difference between a certified and a sworn translation?
A certified translation carries a signed statement by the translator or agency confirming its accuracy. A sworn translation is produced by a translator appointed by a court or authority in some countries, such as France, Italy or Spain. We tell you which one your authority requires and provide it.
Will Identità accept my translation?
Identità has specific rules depending on where the document and the translation come from. We check your case against its current requirements before we start and prepare the translation accordingly.
Can you translate from a scan or a photo?
Yes. A clear scan or photo is enough for us to prepare a quote and, in most cases, the translation. Some authorities require the translation to be bound to the original or to a certified copy — we will advise you.
Apostille
Which documents can be apostilled in Malta?
Public documents issued in Malta, such as civil status certificates, police conduct certificates, court documents, notarial deeds, academic certificates and Malta Business Registry documents. Some documents must first be certified by the issuing body or a notary.
Do I need an apostille for a document used within the EU?
Often not. EU Regulation 2016/1191 removes the apostille requirement for many public documents (birth, marriage, residence, criminal record and others) circulating between EU Member States. Other documents, and documents used outside the EU, may still need one. We check this for you.
Can a foreign document be apostilled in Malta?
No. An apostille can only be issued by the country that issued the document. For foreign documents we can coordinate the apostille in the country of origin through our international network.
Embassy & consular legalisation
How do I know if I need an apostille or full legalisation?
It depends on the destination country. If it is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, an apostille is enough. If not, full consular legalisation is required. Tell us the country and we will confirm the exact procedure.
The embassy is not in Malta. Can you still legalise my document?
Yes. Many countries cover Malta from an embassy in Rome or another capital. We coordinate the submission and the return of your documents.
Do commercial documents follow the same process?
Commercial documents often require extra steps, such as certification by the Malta Business Registry or the Malta Chamber of Commerce before Ministry and embassy legalisation. We prepare the full chain.
Notarised certified true copies
Do I need to bring the original document?
Yes. The notary must see the original to certify that the copy is true. We arrange the appointment and can collect and return the documents by courier where possible.
Can a notarised copy be apostilled?
Yes. A copy certified by a Maltese notary can be apostilled by the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, which makes it valid in all Hague Convention countries.
Power of attorney
I live in Malta and need to sell property in Italy or France. Can you help?
Yes. We prepare the power of attorney in the required languages, arrange the signature before a notary in Malta, obtain the apostille and send the document to the notary handling the sale.
Does a power of attorney need a translation?
In most cases, yes, if it will be used in a country with a different official language. Many notaries prefer a bilingual document, which avoids a separate translation.
Document retrieval
Do you need my authorisation to request a document?
For some documents, yes. Personal records generally require the applicant's consent and a copy of their identity document. We tell you exactly what is needed for each request.
Can you obtain documents from abroad for use in Malta?
Yes. We coordinate with partners in the country of origin to obtain the document, the apostille or legalisation, and the translation into English or Maltese.
Interpreting
How far in advance should I book an interpreter?
As early as possible, especially for rarer languages and for conferences. For urgent appointments, contact us by phone and we will do our best to find an interpreter at short notice.
Do you provide interpreters in Gozo?
Yes. We cover all of Malta, Gozo and Comino, and remote interpreting is available anywhere.
